Born in the Amazon rainforest but primarily cultivated in West Africa

The cacao tree belongs to the Sterculiaceae family, forming the genus Theobroma. Although more than 22 species are listed, only one, Theobroma cacao or ‘food of the gods,’ is produced commercially.

The cacao tree ideally grows in tropical regions, within a belt of approximately 20° North-South of the equator. Although cocoa originates from the Amazon rainforest, nearly 70% of global production is now concentrated in West Africa.

The main producing countries are Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Outside of Africa, other major cocoa producers include Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and the Dominican Republic.

The three main varieties of cacao are Forastero, Criollo, and Trinitario.”

It is said that Quetzalcoatl stole the cacao tree from paradise and planted it in Tula, Mexico

Mexican culture is rich in history and traditions, many of which are reflected in fables and myths. The legend of cocoa and the mythical god Quetzalcoatl tells how the ancient god gave the precious cocoa beans to the Toltecs. This generous god wanted his people to be well-fed and healthy so that they could dedicate themselves to fulfilling their tasks, striving to be diligent, cultured, generous, and artistically talented.
